Because I would love a be-gowned Doctor, and I’m pretty sure he’s a timelord already.

Editor’s Note: Our second Genderqueer Time Lord entry (I count Tilda as the first, really) and I’ll bet his sonic screwdriver would be craaaaaaaaaaazylooking. It would also be nice to have Alan, an extremely sexualized performer, portray an utterly non-sexual being without losing his eccentric take on beauty.

Because who can argue with that? Also, she’d pick up Harkness and Hart for companions, because the cloying companions are getting old, and she needs someone pretty rough and tumble to keep up with her.

A lot of space and time would bear bullet holes though…..

She’d truly be an amazing Doctor. In her time on being human she showed just how much of a serious dramatic actor she can be, but at the same time she had these little bursts of hilarious madness that are such an interesting part of the doctor’s character.

For her companion, I’d really love to see Lily Loveless take on the role. She’s great at playing anxious and scared, but also truly amazing at acting as a character who’s really brave and strongwilled and confident.

But who I’d really love to see as The Doctor is Tamsin Greig.

She’s done quite a bit of comedy in her time, so she ought to be able to pull off the appropriate level of quirkiness. But she has also had her share of more serious roles on screen and stage, so the serious side of The Doctor should also come through.

I suppose it depends quite a bit on how one sees The Doctor evolving in their next regeneration. Does ‘The Doctor’ become harder and more serious and cynical about the world (I could see Mirren doing this well), or more optimistic about the universe, rediscovering their sense of mirth. (Greig would be great for this I think.)

She’d wear riding outfits and be amazingly sassy! I think she’d pull back on the quirkiness of 11 and be a more… mature and perhaps nurturing kind of Doctor, with a side of a very wicked sense of humor (if Emma’s stories of being roommates with Stephen Fry is anything to go by). I’m not sure how that would work in his character trajectory, but I’d love to see it.

I had a conversation the other day with my friend (also a huge Whovian) about how neat it would be to see a female Doctor. She agreed completely, but we found ourselves wondering, “Who could play the Doctor?”

Without thinking about it, I suggested Freema Agyeman. Why? Because she’s awesome, obviously. She played Martha, and got that role by playing another character. Colin Baker got the role of the 6th Doctor by playing a Time Lord who shot Peter Davison, so why not have an actress who played a minor character, who then played a companion? It sounds wonderfully recursive and just like Doctor Who casting to me!

Where do I begin with Tilda Swinton? She is a performer who laughs in the face of gender norms. I think the Doctor, being so accustomed to 700+ years of maleness and suddenly finding himself in the form of Ms. Swinton, would be just as much a stranger to the gender binary as she is. Like many of the Doctors, she is an iconic UK performer and has an otherworldliness to her looks.

“I’m a girl!”

Companion: I think it would be lovely to see a transgender companion with the first female doctor. Just for the pure Vaudeville of their conversations.

“People used to think you were a man too?”

“Yes, for a millennium or so.”

“How was your transition?”

“Fiery ball of light. Shooting plasma everywhere. Run of the mill.”

editor: This brings up the interesting question of hetero-normal VS gender balance when it comes to companions. It has been rare recently that we get a male companion who lasts, and is not the accessory of a female companion. However, there is something to be said about having a male(ish) and female(ish) perspective, especially since they shouldn’t necessarily have to deal with hetero-normal romantic tension.

At any rate, I am all about male companions, and all about homosocial bonding. So it’s a win-win for me! And if I may also say… phwoaaarrr!

She wants it. We want it. What’s stopping them? And who would be her companion? I think it should be a love-struck teen obsessed with Venus in Furs, and they can go on Victorian sleigh rides together and get caught in time hurricanes.

I'd absolutely ADORE a female Doctor. Seriously. In my head it's always Dawn French though, and I'm not sure how well that would work.
